Virtual Try-On for a Romanian Hair Color Brand

Banuba helped Scorpion Technology – a custom software company – deliver quality web-based experience for their client.

Client

Scorpion Technology is a Bucharest-based technology company with over 10 years in the market and customers all over the globe. It makes turnkey web and mobile apps, as well as does SEO, provides hosting for its clients, and offers other IT services.

Loncolor, a Romanian hair dye and hair care producer, approached Scorpion technology to create a virtual try-on experience for their customers. While Scorpion’s own team was capable, they decided that to better fulfill this request they needed a reliable augmented reality SDK to launch the solution faster. Banuba had exactly the product that would fit.

Solution

Scorpion Technologies developed an effective virtual try-on solution with a simple, intuitive flow:

  1.  A customer scans a QR-code on the Loncolor dye package
  2.  A unique web page opens in the customer’s browser
  3.  Once the customer’s face is on camera, the web page shows how the chosen hair color will look on them.

This approach brings virtual try-on to any store where Loncolor products are sold without any additional expenses, making it very cost-effective.

The hair color component of this solution is based on Banuba’s Face AR SDK – a powerful augmented reality toolkit with an extensive feature set:

  • Virtual try-on of cosmetics, hats, jewelry, accessories, and more
  • 3D face masks
  • Virtual backgrounds
  • Beauty filters
  • Avatars
  • Facial feature editing
  • Triggers
  • Etc.

However, it is also flexible, allowing companies to license only the features they need instead of the entire package.

Face AR SDK is available for Windows, Mac, Web, Mobile (native, as well as Flutter & React Native), and Unity. This means developers can benefit from it no matter what technology they choose for their project.

Why Banuba

Out of all similar offerings, Scorpion Technology chose Banuba for the following reasons:

  • Try-on quality. The recoloring filter only affects hair, realistically interacts with the user’s natural color, and works well in different lighting conditions. High performance also helped.
  • Flexibility. Scorpion Technology could license only the try-on feature they needed to avoid bloating the end-product with unnecessary code.
  • Ease of use. Integrating Face AR SDK is a breeze thanks to convenient distribution and detailed documentation.

The collaboration between Banuba and Scorpion Technology was smooth and efficient. The teams worked closely together to achieve the established objectives and meet Loncolor's expectations. The process was well-organized and results-oriented- Gigi Nuta, CEO, Scorpion Technology

Results

The project rolled out in 2025 to positive feedback. As more Loncolor customers learn about the virtual try-on functionality, it is being used more often and the market signals its effectiveness.
